Officially the world’s smallest country – in both size (approximately 44 hectares/110 acres) and population (approximately 800) – Vatican City is nonetheless one of the most important sites on Earth. The Vatican is home to the Pope (also known as the Bishop of Rome), worldwide head of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as some of Western culture’s most significant library and museum collections and buildings, including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Cistine Chapel and famous works by Bernini, Botticelli, Michelangelo and Raphael.
Millions of people visit Vatican City each year. To prevent visitors and residents from being victimized by crime – the most common offenses at the Vatican are purse snatching, pickpocketing and shoplifting – and to protect the city itself, the Vatican has installed intelligent video appliances for added security.
