IMAGING
Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for the modeling and characterization of CMOS and CCD image sensors and other imaging systems. The successful candidate will play an essential role in the development of new imaging systems thru his or hers expert understanding of sensor performance and appling that knowledge to help the design of image sensors and the development of software to control and process sensor images. This engineer brings to Pixim the ability to fully simulate imaging systems, including Pixim's own and the competition. He or she will help predict the results of designs, optimize designs, and do competitive analysis on imaging sensors and systems. Identify the critical performance parameters and work in the characterization lab to obtain critical parameters to simulations. These simulations will cover all the important physical, electronic, optical and algorithmic aspects of image acquisition.
This engineer will collaborate with groups outside, and within Pixim. He or she will work closely with Stanford University and other institutions to acquire software, models, simulators, images and other tools to complement what is developed in-house. Develop and maintain simulations and image processing libraries to support product development within PIXIM. This will include the interface with the VLSI team to analyze design trade-offs and recommend improvements.Work closely with the pixel and sensor design teams to support their work, provide them with simulations of current designs and feedback on critical system choices.Work closely with the firmware development teams to simulate image processing algorithms and suggest, design, modify algorithms for PIXIM’s systems. This will include, auto-exposure, auto-white-balance, enhancement, color correction, tone correction, etc.
Secondary Responsibilities
The candidate will work in an optical lab to develop optical and electronic measurement procedures, including the development test programs, fixtures and other hardware required for sensor testing. Work with marketing to simulate, analyze and predict the performance of competitive systems. Simulate competitors systems from their spec sheets. Suggest competitive paths, help develop and support critical specs, such as noise, dynamic range, numerical aperture, etc. Other common aspects of the work may include: manage and support the imaging lab including documentation, the procurement and specification of electronic and optical test and measurement equipment; develop and document automated software for instrument control, data collection and analysis; work with members of the sensor design team on the design of test structures and the analysis of sensor performance, collect, document and maintain database of competitive sensor performance data; work closely with Pixim customers, operations, and marketing, to develop tests, characterization methods, tolerances, specifications and documentation that will insure the imaging performance of Pixim products.
Primary Qualifications
In depth understanding of CCD and CMOS design and the factors affecting performance. In depth understanding on imaging pipelines. Expert knowledge of Matlab and ability to develop complex simulation tools within that environment. Knowledge of optics, optical design, radiometry and optical characterization. Demonstrated ability to work with test and measurement equipment to characterize imaging performance. Familiarity with GPIB instrument control, HP-VEE. Familiarity with video technology as well as digital still camera design and architecture. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of cross functional teams. Demonstrated hands-on, creative approach to problem solving in a research and development environment. Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and present results of high quality experiments.
